Nel 2006 l’associazione per la tutela del patrimonio culturale di Laces (HPV) ha visitato la chiesa di San Nicolò in occasione dell‘assemblea generale. Ha subito notato che la chiesa non era in buone condizioni. „Siccome uno dei nostri compiti è quello di proteggere i beni culturali di Laces, ci siamo messi al lavoro, anche se a quel punto ancora non sapevamo che si trattasse di un progetto così grande. All’inizio volevamo soltanto salvare dal degrado la chiesa di San Nicolò”, spiega l’ex presidente Hannes Gamper.

The association for the protection of the cultural heritage (HPV) Laces visited the Saint Nicholas Church as part of its plenary assembly in 2006 and immediately realized that it was in a bad condition. „It is, after all, our task to preserve cultural heritage in Laces and so we began to work. We didn’t know that it would be such a big project in the end. At first, we only wanted to save the Saint Nicholas Church from dilapidation,“ explains Hannes Gamper, former president of the HPV.

L’HPV ha iniziato da solo ad eliminare la muffa dall’interno. Dopo una prima valutazione l’associazione di Laces ha capito che per questo progetto ci voleva un proprio gruppo di lavoro per poter continuare parallelamente le attività normali dell'HPV Latsch. I membri di questo gruppo di lavoro erano Hannes Gamper, la forza trainante del progetto, l’attuale presidente dell’HPV Joachim Schwarz, il referente comunale Mauro Dalla Barba e l’architetto Klaus Marsoner. In consultazione con l’Ufficio Beni Architettonici ed Artistici ci si chiedeva quale sarebbe stata la funzione futura della chiesa. Siccome la chiesa è proprietà del comune di Laces dal 1811, il progetto elaborato è stato presentato al consiglio comunale dove ha ricevuto l'incarico per il risanamento della chiesa con voto unanime. Il primo lotto dell'intervento comprendeva la deumidificazione, l’abbassamento dell’ingresso al livello originale e il restauro dei muri esterni. A causa dell‘umidità persistente è stata scavata una nuova fossa di drenaggio più profonda ed è stato costruito un nuovo muro di cinta. Grazie a contributi della provincia, donazioni dell'associazione „Amici della chiesa di San Nicolò“ e al sostegno della Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Bolzano si è riusciti a finanziare completamente il progetto.

At the beginning, the HPV started to work on its own and removed the mold from the interior. After a first evaluation it became clear that a separate work group was needed for this task to be able to continue the HPV’s normal activity in parallel. This work group consisted of Hannes Gamper, the driving force of the project, the current president Joachim Schwarz, member of the municipal council Mauro Dalla Barba and architect Klaus Marsoner. First of all, the future purpose of the church had to be determined in consultation with the Office for the Preservation of Historical Monuments. As the church has been property of the municipality since 1811, the jointly developed project was presented to the municipal council where it got the unanimous assignment to restore the church. The first construction lot included the dehumidification, the lowering of the entrance area to the original level and the renovation of the external walls. A new and deeper drainage ditch had to be dug and a new enclosing wall was built due to the enduring humidity. These works could be completely financed thanks to financial contributions from the province, donations from the „Friends of the Saint Nicholas Church“ association and support from the Cassa di Risparmio di Bolzano Foundation.

Studi dell’Ufficio Beni Archeologici

Nel 2008 Manfred Fuchs, cittadino onorario di Laces, ha donato la vetrata della chiesa con la rappresentazione di San Nicolò di Mira. La vetrata è stata realizzata dall’artista Robert Scherer e rappresenta una valorizzazione importante per la chiesa di San Nicolò. L’interno della chiesa è stato completamente restaurato soltanto nel 2016. „Abbiamo scoperto altri affreschi nell’interno della chiesa e abbiamo sistemato un pavimento in acciaio con un impianto di ventilazione sopra il vecchio pavimento già esistente. Per questi lavori abbiamo ricevuto un sostegno finanziario dalla Cassa Rurale di Laces, dall’Ufficio Beni Architettonici ed Artistici, dalla famiglia Fuchs, dalla frazione di Laces e non da ultimo dal comune di Laces. Alla fine il costo complessivo di questo progetto impegnativo era di 180.000,00 euro“, informa Hannes Gamper. A questo punto è già stato deciso di esporre il menhir di Laces nella chiesa di San Nicolò. L’HPV ha riflettuto per molti anni su come e dove esporre il menhir di Laces. Insieme all'amministrazione comunale e alla parrocchia l’associazione per la tutela del patrimonio culturale ha scelto la chiesa di San Nicolò che dopo il restauro offre l'ambiente ideale per esporre questo menhir prezioso. Dal giugno 2017 la chiesa di San Nicolò ospita la mostra „Il menhir di Laces“, realizzata con i mezzi finanziari del programma INTERREG V – Italia-Austria dell’UE nell'ambito di un piccolo progetto della strategia CLLD. La struttura partner è il museo archeologico di Fließ con cui Laces trasmette una parte del progetto „Culti e vita nella preistoria“. (Testo di Rudi Mazagg pubblicato nel mensile „InfoForum“ Laces)

In 2008, Manfred Fuchs, honorary citizen of Laces, donated a stained-glass window with the representation of St. Nicholas of Myra. The stained-glass window was made by artist Robert Scherer and is an important enhancement of the Saint Nicholas Church. In 2016, the church was completely restored inside as well. „Further frescoes were found in the church and a steel floor with ventilation system was installed above the old, already existing floor. We were able to finance these works with financial assistance from Cassa Rurale di Laces, the Office for the Preservation of Historical Monuments, the Fuchs family, Frazione di Laces and the municipal administration. In the end, the total costs of this complex project amounted to 180,000.00 euros,“ informs Hannes Gamper. At that time, it had already been decided to exhibit the Laces menhir in the Saint Nicholas Church. The HPV had reflected for years about where and how to best present the Laces menhir. The association for the protection of the cultural heritage decided together with the municipal administration and the parish that the restored Saint Nicholas Church would offer the perfect ambience for exhibiting this precious menhir. The Saint Nicholas Church has hosted „The Laces Menhir“ exhibition since 2017. This exhibition was realized with financial means of EU’s INTERREG V – Italy-Austria program as part of a small-scale project of the CLLD strategy.
